Talent acquisition and leading high-performing teams
Building and maintaining high-performing teams has been a key ingredient to success throughout my career. Taking care of my people has been the secret to taking care of my customers.
Interviewing and hiring: I have qualified and hired hundreds of employees. I enjoy evaluating candidates and finding the best fit for the position. I create rapport and authentic dialogue with candidates to help us both equally assess the opportunity.
Hiring exceptional people: Hiring a good employee is not enough. I also follow State and Federal laws, reduce biases, and give everyone a fair chance to compete. I am proud of the talent I have hired, many of whom are still thriving and growing in their jobs.
Performance management: Both at KPMG and the State, performance check-ins have been a key part of the employee experience. I love to celebrate and document employee successes, while encouraging a growth mindset.
Team building: My dream job is to lead a team of engaged and contributing members. I have done so with excellence and earned the respect and pride of my employees.
Engendering trust: In 2017, I took a course from the Steven Covey organization called “The Speed of Trust.” This course taught me how to apply trust principles, language, and practices within my teams. I still actively use these principles today and consider trust as essential for managing people.
Personal development: When I joined Bellevue College, my boss said to me, “Marc, in five years I do not expect you to be where you are today.” He set an expectation for growth and promotion. Today, I have the same mindset for all of my hires.
Mentoring and coaching: In the last 13 years I have had extensive training in how to best engage employees with their job and the company. A happy, engaged, growing, and recognized employee makes the company a better place.
Project management
Projects are integral to thriving organizations. I constantly strive to enhance and lead initiatives that foster positive change.
SAFe certification: I am certified by Scaled Agile in Leading SAFe. This helps me apply the Agile methodology to any organization’s portfolio management. It is a way of thinking that allows fast and flexible service delivery and improvement.
Budgeting and planning: I have led successful projects with careful planning and budgeting. I have also handled surprises that could affect the budget and delivery. I have learned that regular communication and transparency with stakeholders are key.
Effective communications: I can communicate well with everyone in the organization. Executive leaders and employees have different information needs, but both need inclusion.
Executive updates: I have experience and confidence in engaging senior leadership. I provide brief and regular updates on project statuses to support organizational change.
Communications
Excellent communication is foundational to all successful organizations
Writing and branding: I have experience writing and designing newsletters, business communications, correspondence and training materials. I routinely take writing courses to improve my skills.
Presentations and public speaking: I can speak publicly, train, and host in-person and virtual sessions. I use engaging visuals and involve participants without relying too much on PowerPoint.
Web and SharePoint familiarity: My Workplace Innovation team maintained a customized SharePoint site used as a resource and policy center for cross-functional teams of about 2,000 employees. We made it easy to navigate and user-friendly.
Design Thinking
Design thinking is a powerful methodology that helps you solve complex problems by putting the user at the center of everything.
Customer centricity: I start every design by first knowing my users and their needs, motivations, and behaviors. I use empathy maps, personas, and journey maps to understand their experiences. I also observe, interview, and survey them to get feedback and check my assumptions.
MVP: I create minimum viable products, which are basic versions of my products or services that I can test and learn from my users. MVPs help me save time and resources by avoiding unwanted or unnecessary features. I use prototypes, experiments, and pilots to make and test my MVPs with real users and measure their results.
Innovation mindset: I have a mindset that sees uncertainty, ambiguity, and failure as chances to learn and improve. I am curious, collaborative, and optimistic, and ready to challenge the status quo and explore new options. I am also iterative, meaning that I always test, learn, and improve my solutions based on user feedback and data.
Process improvement
I am a process improvement expert with a passion for delivering value to customers and stakeholders. I have experience in:
SWOT Analysis: I use this tool to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in a project, process, or organization. This helps me prioritize actions and align resources to achieve the desired outcomes.
Business transformation: I have led and participated in several initiatives that involved changing software tools, processes, and methodologies to better serve customer needs and reduce costs. I use design thinking and agile principles to guide the transformation journey.
Minimum Viable Product: I believe in launching early and often, and focusing on delivering immediate value while building and maturing a solution. I use prototypes, experiments, and pilots to test and learn from users and measure the results.
Process mapping: I have extensive experience in mapping the as-is process and comparing it to the future state. This clearly shows the efficiencies gained along with potential savings. I use tools like flowcharts, diagrams, and value stream maps to visualize and communicate the process changes.
Change management: I know that the biggest challenge in process improvement is helping employees embrace and prepare for the change. I use strategies like testing, piloting, feedback loops, communication plans, and training programs to ensure a smooth transition and adoption.

Commercially purchased ERP solutions: I have experience with "out of the box" tools from commercial vendors. My team customized and integrated these solutions with our internal clients' existing systems and data sources.
Locally developed ERP solutions: My team designed and developed custom ERP solutions for internal clients, using low-code or no-code platforms that allowed us to customize existing solutions. I also tested and deployed these solutions across our internal organization.
UX/UI design experience: I created user-friendly and engaging interfaces for ERP applications, using tools such as Adobe XD. I also followed the best practices for wireframes, mockups, development, testing, and deployment in different environments.
